Barbara Scowcroft, Music Director & Conductor

Utah Youth Symphony Orchestra (UYSO)

The Utah Youth Symphony Orchestra, our original orchestra, was founded in 1957. Utah Youth Symphony Orchestra is one of two high school orchestras within UYSO&E.

Led by Music Director and professional Conductor, Barbara Scowcroft, UYSO performs unedited classical literature in some of Utah’s finest concert venues. Sectional instructional sessions are conducted with very low student:teacher ratios by some of our area’s finest musicians, including musicians from the Utah Symphony, U of U Department of Music, and other top-tier music instructors in our area.

Utah Youth Philharmonic (UYPhil)

The Utah Youth Philharmonic was formed in 2008. During auditions for UYSO that year, it became clear that a second orchestra was needed due to the number of youth musicians who had the desire to participate in UYSO. Music Director and professional Conductor Barbara Scowcroft leads the UYPhil in rehearsing and performing unedited classical literature in Utah’s premiere concert halls. Sectional sessions are led by our area’s finest musicians, including musicians from the Utah Symphony, U of U Department of Music, and other top-tier music instructors in our area.
